Corvina, Cantina di Negrar 2016 $14 (Veneto) Cantina di Negrar is a co-op of family run farms mostly in Valpolicella all working organically. They are most famous for accidentally creating Amarone in 1936 when they let their dessert wine ferment completely dry. Corvina is the main grape that goes into Amarone and this one is made all in steel and really shows off the varietal character of this grape with dark cherries and baking spice.
Colli Piacentini Rosso "Cor", Bulli $17 (Emilia-Romagna) From our friends the Bulli family in Piacenza, this is a field blend of 60% Barbera, 30% Bonarda and 10% Uva Rara from 50 year old vines, made in a juicy, fresh and chillable style with no sulfur or anything else added. These Bulli wines are so delicious!
Barbera "Fuso", Walter Massa 2017 $17 (Piedmont)Organic Barbera from Colli Tortonesi, in southeastern Piedmont, made all in concrete and bottled with minimal sulfur. Walter Massa is a legend and this is his every day farmer wine. Medium to full bodied with plush dark red fruit. Pizza wine.
Vino Tinto Pais "Pipeno", Cacique Maravilla 2019 $20 (Chile) This is a longtime shop favorite. 100% Pais from 250 (!) year old vines in the Bio Bio valley of central Chile, made naturally by Manuel Moraga whose family has been making wine on this farm for 7 generations. Smoky dark red fruit and spice, but light on it's feet with a juicy lipsmacking finish. Another one you can throw in the fridge for a bit, but don't let it get too cold or you'll miss out on the crazy aromatics. You'll be glad it's in a bigger bottle.
Raetinello Vernatsch, Loacker 2018 $17 (Alto Adige) 100% Vernatsch aka Schiava from 3 biodynamic vineyards planted in '65, '67 and '80 1500 feet up in the Dolomite mountains above Bolzano in Alto Adige. Fermented and aged all in steel and bottled with minimal sulfur added. Unmistakable Alpine, light in color and almost weightless, but still complex with wild berries and pine needles. Throw this in the fridge and treat it like a heavy rose.
Carignan, Domaine Reine Juliette 2018 $14 (Languedoc) 100% Carignan from low yield organic vineyards planted to marl and red clay soils near the Thau Lagoon in southeastern France. Fermented and aged in concrete for 6 months. Medium bodied and dark fruited with silky tannins.
