Pentimento, Chateau Beausejour 2016 (Bordeaux, France)
Michele d'Aprix is a rising star in the wine world. Having graduated from UC Davis, she made her way to Bordeaux and found herself being mentored by superstar winemaker Stephane Derenoncourt. After learning at the hands of a master who has crafted numerous 100 pt wines, Michele started her own project, Pentimento. Amazingly, she is able to source her grapes from the same vineyards at Ch. Beausejour that Stephane uses!
75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc sourced from vines with an average age of 55 years, with some as old as 115! Michele uses a very gentle approach to this wine – basket-pressing following destemming, natural yeast fermentation, then aging in one year old, lightly toasted barrels.
Beautiful, ripe fruit aromas of juicy black cherry, cassis, and black plum lead the way and remind us of the many virtues of this perfectly ripe, stellar vintage. More than just fruit, there are beautiful hints of minerality and earth, graphite, and floral notes, with a fabulous structure, perfectly ripe tannin, and serious finesse. What really sets this apart from the pack, however, is not so much the individual flavors as it is the mesmerizing combination of depth, richness, and astounding purity.
