Chenin Blanc "L'Ame de Fond", Le Fief Noir 2018 (Loire Valley, France)

Old-vine Chenin Blanc is always something spectacular. In the region of Anjou known as Anjou Noir, the schist soils combine with fissures in the rock base to provide ample space for deep roots to take hold. The 45 year plus age of these durable vines shines through in the wine. The richness and clarity of flavor are opulent yet have a restrained mineral character. There is a first pass before the grapes are hand picked to filter out any botrytized grapes, resulting in very ripe yet clean aromas. Honeyed peaches, ginger powder, white pepper, and lovely wet stones are a definite match for many fish, pork, or poultry dishes.
