Carignan "Salvaje", Villalobos 2016 (Colchagua Valley, Chile)

This is from a 60 year wild vineyard of Carignan, not far from the pacific coast. The vines are not pruned or trained and they sometimes climb up trees, there is no irrigation or tilling or any intervention, whatsoever other than picking the grapes when they're ready. Once they are, they get foot stomped and wild fermented, then aged in large old barrels before getting bottled unfiltered with minimal sulfur. Lively dark fruit with smoky spice.
