Corpinnat Brut Nature "Terrers", Recaredo 2014 $36 Recaredo started in the '20s and hasn't changed much since: Dry farmed vineyards in Alt Penedes with no synthetic chemicals ever. Wild fermentation. All bottles are hand riddled and hand disgorged without freezing the bottle's neck. Only single vintage Cavas and only Brut Nature, no dosage on anything they make. This is their "basic" bottling made from 56% Xarel-lo, 42% Macabeu and 2% Parellada, aged on the lees for 4 (!!) years. This used to be considered a Cava Gran Reserva, but last year Recaredo along with 8 other traditional producers decided to break off from the DO system and make their own, much stricter designation under the name Corpinnat (which roughly translates to Heart of Penedes). Mouthwatering minerality with citrus blossoms and orchard fruit. One of the best deals in bubbles.
Rioja Reserva Vina Tondonia, Lopez de Heredia 2008 $60 Lopez de Heredia has been hands down the best producer in Rioja for the last 130 years and they have also led the way for organic farming and producing their wines traditionally and naturally from the start. Sisters Mercedes and Maria-Jose Lopez de Heredia carry on these traditions and make the wines exactly as their parents and grandparents and great grandparents did. This is a blend of 75% Tempranillo, 15% Garnacha and the other 10% is a mix of Mazuelo and Graciano, all hand harvested from 45+ year old vines in the Tondonia vineyard that has never seen any chemicals whatsoever. The wine is aged in really special old American oak barrels (which they make in house with wood from West Virginia) for 6 years before getting bottled unfiltered. Medium bodied plus with deep and complex notes of spiced cherries and earth.
