Sfera Rosso Litro, Frecciarossa 2020 $23 (Lombardy) We fully embrace this boom in liter collaborations happening all over Europe in the past few years. This one comes from our friends at Portovino, one of our favorite Italian importers and the Odero family who have been making beautiful wine in Oltrepo Pavese under the name Frecciarossa for the past hundred years. This is a co-fermented blend of red and white grapes- 30% Uva Rara, 30% Barbera, 25% Croatina, 25% Pinot Nero, 15% Riesling made with low sulfur and low alcohol, but highly chuggable with bright cherry and pomegranate notes and long mouthwatering finish. Juicy business.
Grignolino "Marcaleone", Crealto 2018 $20 (Piedmont) Reference point Grignolino, a local grape to southeastern Piedmont known for its light color, but firm tannins. This comes from a plot of 55 year old vines planted on steep slope by the "master of Grignolino" Marco Quarello, but farmed and produced by Eleonora Costa and Luigi Armanino, two sommeliers from Genoa. Smoky raspberries and crushed rose petals with nice grip. Serve this chilled next to something salty and fatty.
