Tendu, Matthiasson 2019 $24 This is a blend of Aglianico, Montepulciano and Barbera from an organic single vineyard just north of Sacramento. Fermented with native yeast in steel, then pressed off to neutral barrel and bottled unfiltered with no sulfur added. Juicy red berry and plum fruit with a little black olive and crushed rocks. Nice with a little chill, but can go either way. This was our first introduction to the wines of Steve and Jill Matthiasson a few years back and we look forward to every new vintage. Really delicious and a total crowd pleaser.
Skull Red Blend, Monte Rio Cellars 2019 $20 This is a blend of 50% Petite Sirah, 30% Mission, 20% Zinfandel all from organic vineyards around Lodi, fermented 100% whole cluster, full carbonic maceration, then pressed off to old barrel for 10 months, then bottled unfiltered with no sulfur added. Darker fruited than the Tendu, but still juicy and fresh and nice with a little chill, but again, can go either way. Monte Rio Cellars is a project from famed NYC sommelier Patrick Cappiello and Pax Mahle who are making really fresh and delicious (and affordable) wines from organic vineyards all around northern California. We're big fans.
