Barbaresco Riserva "Basarin", Punset 2013 $46 Single vineyard 40+ year old Nebbiolo farmed and produced completely naturally by Marina Marcarino who took over her family winery in Neive, in the heart of Barbaresco in 1982 and has quietly been making some of the best wines in the appellation ever since. This is a stunner from a classic vintage that is just starting to come into its own with reference point varietal notes of rose petal, tar and forest floor with firm, but accessible tannins. 

Carema, Ferrando 2016 $75 Moving north to the steep, windswept vineyards of Carema. This is mountain Nebbiolo expertly made by the Ferrando brothers under the watchful eye of their father Luigi on the northern edge of Piedmont about 45 minutes north of Turin. The grapes are all grown without chemicals, hand harvested and destemmed, then fermented in steel, then aged in barrel for 3 years before bottling unfiltered. Deep and complex with silky tannins with dark red berry fruit and smoky minerality. Truly a special expression of this special grape.
