Podere Sassi 2 Pack

Today we have a couple of bottles from Leo Sassi, whose family runs Panificio Nazzareno, a bakery in the Ponte Flaminio neighborhood in Rome, supplied by their organic farm in northeastern Lazio. Leo's first vintage was 2017 and the wines are exciting and full of life. Here's what we have to offer:

Coraggio 2019 $25 This is a light orange made from 50/50 Malvasia del Lazio and Trebbiano Giallo from organic plots in northeastern Lazio. The grapes are wild fermented on the skins for 2 days and aged in fiberglass tanks, then bottled unfiltered with no sulfur added. Medium bodied with ripe, hazy orchard fruit, apple skin and wild flowers. Soft tannins and more fruit forward than savory, but there's a nice herbal streak as it opens up.

Evviva 2019 $25 This is a Pet-Nat made from 100% Ciliegiolo that spends 3 days on the skins in stainless steel, then once the wine is fermented dry, Leo adds frozen must from the same vintage to start the secondary fermentation and bottles before that's finished, again with no sulfur or anything else added. Smokey raspberry and tart cherry notes with soft tannins and easy bubbles. Open this while you wait for your pizza to be delivered.
