Tempranillo Almate, Alfredo Maestro 2019 (Castilla y Leon, Spain)

Tinto Fino "Vina Almate", Alfredo Maestro 2019 $19 (Castilla y Leon) Alfredo started making wine in '98 and was farming organically from the jump, but taught himself how to actually make the wine from a conventional how-to book which had him using industrial yeasts and adding sugar and clarifiers, et al. Then he came to the conclusion that he was farming naturally, he should be producing naturally as well and by 2003 he stopped using all additives whatsoever, sulfur included, and hasn't looked back since. This is Tinto Fino (aka Tempranillo) from a handful of high altitude vineyards in Ribera del Duero ranging in age from 10-80 years, aged in steel on the lees for 6 months, then bottled unfiltered with no sulfur added. Full bodied with inky dark purple fruit with baking spice and earthy notes of tobacco leaf and leather.
