Zorrito Salvaje 2018 $20 This 'wild little fox' is made up of 50% Cinsault and 50% Pais both from 100+ year old dry farmed vineyards, hand harvested and wild fermented, the Cinsault in steel and the Pais in concrete, then they are pressed off and aged in a combination of steel and old barrel for 9 months. Medium bodied with spicy, smokey red fruit and crushed rocks with an energetic lipsmacking finish. Rustic and charming.
Carignan "Silvestre" 2016 $23 This is Carignan from an 80 year old wild vineyard that has been untouched for 40 years, so the vines are growing up trees and go all over the place, which is exactly how the Villalobos like it. They don't prune or interfere with this vineyard in any way, except for harvesting. The grapes are wild fermented in steel, then aged for 18 months in old barrels before getting bottled unfiltered with just a little sulfur. Medium plus with silky dark berry fruit and earth. Really delicious and a total crowd pleaser.
