Anna Martens and her husband Eric Narioo have been working on the north side of Mount Etna since 2008, while also importing some the best natural wine from all over to the UK. They work out of a 250 year old cellar called a Palmento and lovingly farm some really old vines on a handful of terraced vineyards way up on the steep slopes of the volcano. These wines are not to be missed. Here's what we have to offer:
Palmentino Rosso 2019 $28 About 90% Nerello Mascalese with rest being a blend of Nerello Cappuccio, Alicante and a handful of white varietals in the mix as well, all from high elevation old organic plots. The wine is made in a combination of Old barrel, steel tank and underground Georgian Qvevri, then blended and bottled unfiltered with almost no sulfur added. Zippy and fresh with wild strawberries, crushed red cherries and smoky minerality on a silky light-side-of-medium frame. Great with a little chill.
Jeudi 15 Rosso 2020 $30 80+ year old Nerello Mascalese from organic bush trained vines planted 840 meters (!) up on the north side of Mount Etna. 70% destemmed by hand and 30% whole cluster wild fermented in open topped barrels for 2 weeks, then pressed off to old barrels for 7 months and bottled unfiltered with minimal sulfur added. Wild red berry fruit and smoky crushed rocks on a friendly, medium bodied frame. Everything Anna makes is beautiful.
