West Coast Valentine's 2 Pack

French Lessons, Monument Wine Company 2019 $26 (Oregon)  Monument is a project from Tyler Magyar, who worked in the NYC wine world for years before heading to Oregon in 2015 to work for Andy Young at Marigny/St. Reginald Parish. Now he's buying fruit from growers he trusts all around Oregon and bringing it back to his cellar in Portland to make really delicious wines as naturally as possible. This one is a 50/50 blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay that is flat out beautiful with medium bodied orchard fruit and ripe citrus and a smoky minerality that develops and shows itself as it comes up to temperature.

Love Red, Broc Cellars 2019 $24 (California) The color says it all. This is a juicy and chuggable blend of 77% Carignan, 15% Valdigue and 8% Syrah, all from dry farmed 70+ year old vines in Mendocino and Solano County California, hand harvested and wild fermented mostly whole cluster, then aged in a combination of concrete and old barrels. Chris Brockway, like Tyler above, buys fruit from growers he trusts all over northern California and makes his wines in Berkeley. Everything he makes is delicious, but this one and his Le Clairet that we featured a few weeks back are our favorites.
