Savigny-les-Beaune "Les Pimentiers", Domaine Petitot 2018 (Burgundy, France) $40 Reference point Pinot Noir from a ripe, friendly vintage made by a truly talented husband and wife team. This comes from an impossibly small plot (less than half an acre) of 60+ year old vines planted on clay and limestone, farmed without chemicals and hand harvested, then fully destemmed and wild fermented in concrete before aging in barrel for a year, then bottled unfiltered. Light on its feet with fresh crushed cherry and strawberry fruit with a streak of mossy forest floor and a firm mineral finish.

Willamette Valley Pinot Noir Charles Coury Vineyard, Golden Cluster 2018 (Oregon, United States) $36 Same grape, same vintage, but a world apart. Charles Coury planted this vineyard in the 60s to 8 different non Dijon clones of Pinot Noir on their own rootstock in sandy loess soil, in the northwestern part of Willamette Valley in Forest Grove (to our non nerd friends, all of these data points are unusual and exciting!). Fast forward to 2013 when Jeff Vejr stumbled into the opportunity to work with these beautiful old vines and started Golden Cluster. The grapes are hand harvested and wild fermented, then aged for a year in smaller barrels and bottled unfiltered with basically no sulfur added. Darker and deeper than the Burgundy above, this shows roasted raspberries and baking spice on a broader frame.

Castillon Cotes de Bordeaux "Pentimento", Michele D'Aprix 2016 (Bordeaux, France) $26 This is a longtime shop favorite and we have been lucky to have Michele pour her wines here a few times over the last couple of years. For those who aren't familiar, Michele lives in NYC, but makes wine in a handful of places from Bordeaux to Catalonia, but Pentimento is her baby. This is 75% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Franc from a single organic vineyard in Castillon, on the right bank, destemmed and fermented with native yeast in steel, then aged for a year in barrel and bottled with minimal sulfur. Silky dark berry fruit, black pepper and earthy truffle notes all in perfect balance thanks to this stellar vintage.

Mas Irene, Pares Balta 2016 (Catalonia, Spain) $35 Like our Pinot Noir point and counter point showdown above, this wine is the same blend from the same vintage as the Pentimento, but from our friends Irene and Maria Elena at Pares Balta in the hills of Penedes, south of Barcelona. This is 66% Merlot and 33% Cabernet Franc from biodynamic vineyards, hand harvested and wild fermented, then aged for 13 months in French oak and bottled with almost no sulfur added. Darker and more fleshy than the Pentimento with lush purple fruit and crushed flowers. This wine is a bottled holiday hug.

VS Tinto, Vinos Subterraneos 2015 (Rioja, Spain) $33 Old school Rioja made outside of the DO system by native son and renegade purist Gaby Maztoy. This is a blend of 85% Tempranillo, 8% Viura, 7% Graciano from organic vineyards in Rioja Alavesa. Hand harvested and wild fermented in open topped 500L barrels, in a semi-carbonic atmosphere, then foot crushed and aged for 20 months in used French oak barrels on the lees. Bottled unfined, unfiltered, with only a tiny amount of SO2 at bottling. Full bodied with dark cherry and earthy leather notes.

Barolo Monvigliero, Poderi Roset 2013 (Piedmont, Italy) $50 Last but not least we have a true gem from Silvio Busca who, like Gaby above, is in love with his hometown and makes pure expressions of these special vineyards. This is Nebbiolo from a tiny plot of old vines in the Monvigliero Cru, which is the crown jewel of Verduno, the northernmost village of Barolo. The vines see no chemicals whatsoever, the grapes are hand harvested and wild fermented, then aged for 3 years in a mix of different sized and aged barrels, then bottled unfiltered with minimal sulfur. 2013 was a spectacular vintage in Barolo and this wine is showing beautifully with classic notes of rose petal and tar with forest berries, wild herbs and supple, but present tannins. Complex and classic.
