Gruner Veltliner Hollenburger, Christoph Hoch NV $21 (Kremstal, Austria) Biodynamic Gruner from terraced vineyards around Hollenburg in Kremstal. Christoph ferments and ages everything in large old barrels and treats each barrel as an experiment- some with skin contact, some with no malo, some whole cluster, etc, then he blends to taste, always using multiple vintages- 40% from the current vintage, 40% the previous vintage and 20% three vintages back. Wild and unique with textured, hazy yellow fruit, but unmistakably Gruner with notes of white pepper, cucumber and lime zest.
Gruner Veltliner "Hollotrio", Familie Bauer 2020 $20 (Wagram, Austria) A full liter of Orange Gruner, hand harvested from 30+ year old biodynamic vines, fully destemmed then 20% of the skins are left in with the juice for 2 weeks, then aged in steel on the lees for 3 months before getting bottled unfiltered with minimal sulfur. Clean and precise and maybe a little more fruit driven than the Hoch above.
