Valentine's Cru Beaujolais 2 Pack

Georges Descombes is considered by some to be the unofficial fifth member of the Gang of Four, a legendary group of winemakers who pushed back against industrial Beaujolais in the 80s and are largely responsible for the Natural Wine boom that we are enjoying today. Georges' step son Damien Coquelet has been working closely with him since he was 10 and released his first solo vintage at the ripe old age of 20 in 2007. Damien works out of the same cellar as Georges, in Morgon, along with his brother Kevin, and follows the same recipe-- chemical free farming, native yeast, semi carbonic fermentation, little or no sulfur used only at bottling. Today we have 2 bottles that provide a perfect snapshot of the excellent 2019 vintage from 2 different Crus. Here's the lineup:

Georges Descombes Regnie 2019 $29 Regnie is just south of Morgon and the furthest west of all of the Beaujolais Crus. Like Morgon, there is a distinct minerality to these wines, but with a softer, silkier frame. Georges makes one of the benchmark examples. This is from his younger Gamay vines, still 30+ years old, made all in concrete.

Damien Coquelet Chiroubles 2019 $27 Chiroubles is just north Morgon and just south of Fleurie and shares some characteristics from from both, but also happens to have the highest elevation vines in Burgundy which gives these wines an energy and weightlessness that defines the Cru. This comes from a few small Gamay plots of varying age, also made all in concrete.
