We look forward to these wines every year! For those who aren't familiar, Joan Ramon Escoda and his wife Carmen Sanahuja started working Carmen's family's land in Conca de Barbera, right at the foot of Montblanc, west of Barcelona, in the late 90's. They were working naturally from the start and by 2005 had stopped using sulfur altogether and haven't looked back. Joan Ramon is a real ambassador for Catalan natural wines and is one of the founders of the H20 Vegetal wine festival along with Bar Brutal in Barcelona and the Brutal wines, all of which promote like-minded makers fueling the current natural wine boom worldwide. Cool kid status aside, these bottles are just flat out delicious every vintage. Here's what we have to offer today:
Nas del Gegant 2018 $29 This is a blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Garnatxa, Samso and Sumoll from younger vines in the hills of Conca de Barbera where Joan Ramon Escoda and his wife Carmen Sanahuja have been leading the natural wine charge since the late 90s. This is their easy drinker made all in concrete and bottled unfiltered with no sulfur added. Juicy and light on its feet with smoky, spicy dark red fruit.
Les Paredetes 2018 $42 This is a blend of 70% Carinena (aka Carignan) and 30% Garnatxa (aka Grenache) from 20+ year old vines that have never seen chemicals, all hand harvested and wild fermented in concrete, then aged in steel on the lees before getting bottled unfiltered with no sulfur added. Silky, spiced dark red fruit with a wild side.
Coll del Sabater $42 When we think of Escoda, this is the wine that comes to mind first. 100% Cabernet Franc fermented and aged in Amphora, then bottled unfiltered with no sulfur added. Medium bodied with beautiful plum fruit and a plush, velvety finish. Get it while you can.
